But have you ever thought of how the most essential seasoning found its way from the depths of the ocean to the spice-shelf container in your kitchen?

How Is Salt Made From Sea Water?

All life started at the sea. Just like our sea salt.

Seawater is collected from the coast and carefully guided into shallow salt pans; wide, flat basins where the process begins.

Then we wait. The sun beats down, slowly pulling the water away day after day. It’s not fast. It’s not fancy. As the water evaporates, tiny crystals begin to form. The salt grows grain by grain, carrying with it the natural minerals from the sea. These minerals are what give sea salt its unique flavour and health benefits.

Why Sun-Dried Salt Is Better?

In most other factories, seawater gets dumped into machines that crank up the heat, or force it to dry with harsh vacuum-evaporation to speed up the process. Unfortunately, this strips out those important minerals, leaving behind something that looks like salt but lacks the soul.

Not us. Our salt takes its time, soaking up the sun and air, slowly drying the way nature intended. No machines, no shortcuts, no man-made processes to make it quicker, faster, unhealthy.

By the end, what we have, at Table Top, is pure, mineral-rich sea salt, just like nature intended.

Harvesting Sea Salt the Traditional Way

Once the salt crystals have formed, the real care begins.

They’re carefully lifted by hand, one batch at a time, to avoid any dirt or impurities. No machines roughing them up here. Then, the salt is spread out again under the sun to dry naturally, slow and steady, just like before.

After drying, the salt is sorted by texture. Some crystals get crushed into a fine powder for everyday cooking. Others stay whole, perfect for pickling, curing or sprinkling on dishes.

This salt is then taken to our factory where there is zero intervention of humans and is extensively washed, sieved and dried mechanically so as to minimally retain the structure as well as the minerals present.

At every step, we keep it simple. We don’t like shortcuts at Table Top. That is the only way we can make salt that you can trust to keep your food clean and real.

The Importance of Iodine

We keep salt as natural as possible, but there is one thing we will not compromise on, ever: your health.

Your body needs iodine. It is not just some random nutrient. It is essential. Without enough iodine, you can develop thyroid problems that affects everything from your energy to your mood. For your kids, it is even more critical because iodine supports brain development and learning.

The problem is most people do not get enough iodine from food alone. Even if you eat well, iodine is usually missing. That is where iodised salt makes a difference.

We add iodine to our salt, with all the care in the world. Just the right amount to help your metabolism, keep your hormones balanced and support mental alertness. Not too much, not too little.

And here is the tricky part. Adding iodine can change the salt’s taste or leave a weird aftertaste. We make sure that does not happen. The iodine is evenly mixed, so the salt stays fresh, looks clean and tastes like the real sea salt it is. No bitterness, no fake flavour.
